Interband electron Raman scattering in a quantum wire in a transverse magnetic field
Electron Raman scattering (ERS) is investigated in a parabolic semiconductor
quantum wire in a transverse magnetic field neglecting by phonon-assisted
transitions. The ERS cross-section is calculated as a function of a frequency
shift and magnetic field. The process involves an interband electronic
transition and an intraband transition between quantized subbands. We analyze
the differential cross-section for different scattering configurations. We
study selection rules for the processes. Some singularities in the Raman
spectra are found and interpreted. The scattering spectrum shows
density-of-states peaks and interband matrix elements maximums and a strong
resonance when scattered frequency equals to the "hybrid" frequency or
confinement frequency depending on the light polarization. Numerical results
are presented for a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wire.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Electron-phonon interaction in quantum-dot/quantum-well semiconductor heterostructures
Polar optical phonons are studied in the framework of the dielectric
continuum approach for a prototypical quantum-dot/quantum-well (QD/QW)
heterostructure, including the derivation of the electron-phonon interaction
Hamiltonian and a discussion of the effects of this interaction on the
electronic energy levels. The particular example of the CdS/HgS QD/QW is
addressed and the system is modelled according to the spherical geometry,
considering a core sphere of material "1" surrounded by a spherically
concentric layer of material "2", while the whole structure is embedded in a
host matrix assumed as an infinite dielectric medium. The strength of the
electron-LO phonon coupling is discussed in details and the polaronic
corrections to both ground state and excited state electron energy levels are
calculated. Interesting results concerning the dependence of polaronic
corrections with the QD/QW structure size are analyzed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Interface optical phonons in spheroidal dots: Raman selection rules
The contribution of interface phonons to the first order Raman scattering in
nanocrystals with non spherical geometry is analyzed. Interface optical phonons
in the spheroidal geometry are discussed and the corresponding Frohlich-like
electron-phonon interaction is reported in the framework of the dielectric
continuum approach. It is shown that the interface phonon modes are strongly
dependent on the nanocrystal geometry, particularly on the ellipsoid's
semi-axis ratio. The new Raman selection rules have revealed that solely
interface phonon modes with even angular momentum are allowed to contribute to
the first order phonon-assisted scattering of light. On this basis we are able
to give an explanation for the observed low frequency shoulders present in the
Raman cross-section of several II-VI semiconductor nanostructures.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
A Robust Multiple Feature Approach To Endpoint Detection In Car Environment Based On Advanced Classifiers
In this paper we propose an endpoint detection system based on the
use of several features extracted from each speech frame, followed by a robust
classifier (i.e Adaboost and Bagging of decision trees, and a multilayer perceptron)
and a finite state automata (FSA). We present results for four different
classifiers. The FSA module consisted of a 4-state decision logic that filtered
false alarms and false positives. We compare the use of four different classifiers
in this task. The look ahead of the method that we propose was of 7 frames,
which are the number of frames that maximized the accuracy of the system.
The system was tested with real signals recorded inside a car, with signal to
noise ratio that ranged from 6 dB to 30dB. Finally we present experimental results
demonstrating that the system yields robust endpoint detection

Potentially Harmful Microalgae from the Southern-Central Coast of Cuba
Benthic and planktic toxic microalgae from the southern-central region of Cuba were surveyed
intermittently between 2007 and 2009, mainly in the estuarine Cienfuegos Bay and its adjacent
coast. The highest abundance of both benthic and planktic species were recorded in dry season and
at the beginning of the rainy period which is directly correlated with a higher incidence of ciguatera
and other episodes associated to harmful algal blooms. Ostreopsis lenticularis and Gambierdiscus
caribaeus were the dominant benthic species in the eastern coast. After heavy rain, Ostreopsis ovata
and Prorocentrum lima were dominant. Moderate abundance of the potentially ciguatotoxic
Prorocentrum concavum, P.rathymum and the dermatotoxic cyanophyte Lyngbya majuscula were
registered on blooms of macroalgae. Gymnodinium catenatum, Pyrodinium bahamense and
Dinophysis ovum were first reported in the region. Blooms of the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia
multistriata have been observed in eutrophic zones. A small episode of dead fish was associated to
blooms of Heterocapsa circularisquama. Other toxic or noxious species have been seen
accompanying such as Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Dinophysis caudata, Gonyaulax polygramma,
G. spinifera and Prorocentrum minimum. High abundance of the cyanobacteria Planktothrix
isothrix, Pseudoanabaena sp., Dolichospermum solitarium and Microcystis aeruginosa were
registered in the bay after hurricanes.Versión del edito

Adverse social determinats and risk for congenital anomalies
INTRODUCCIÓN: Diferentes trabajos han relacionando condiciones sociales adversas a nivel familiar y regional con resultados perinatales (mortalidad neonatal, bajo peso y prematuridad); sin embargo, pocos estudiaron el efecto de la pobreza sobre anomalías congénitas. Objetivo. Evaluar el riesgo de ocurrencia de 25 anomalías congénitas y determinantes sociales adversos según el nivel socioeconómico de la familia y de la región.
POBLACIÓN Y MÉTODOS. Estudio caso-control exploratorio, en el que se utilizaron datos del Estudio Colaborativo Latinoamericano de Malformaciones Congénitas (ECLAMC). La muestra consistió en 3786 recién nacidos vivos con una única malformación y 13 344 controles, seleccionados entre 546 129 nacimientos, ocurridos en 39 hospitales de Argentina durante el período 1992-2001. Se estimaron los riesgos (OR) directos, indirectos (a través de la región de residencia) y la interacción entre el nivel socioeconómico individual y residencial para cada uno de los 25 defectos congénitos.
RESULTADOS: Los defectos labio leporino con/sin paladar hendido (OR= 1,43) y comunicación interventricular (OR= 1,38) mostraron un riesgo significativamente mayor en el nivel socioeconómico más bajo. Los niveles socioeconómicos bajos se asociaron de manera significativa con una mayor frecuencia de consanguinidad parental, ancestros nativos, edad materna menor de 19 años, más de 4 embarazos, bajo número de visitas prenatales y residencia en regiones desfavorables.
CONCLUSIÓN: La fisura labial con o sin paladar hendido y los defectos del tabique interventricular estuvieron asociados significativamente con un nivel socioeconómico más bajo. La falta de planificación familiar, de control prenatal y la exposición a agentes ambientales o teratógenos pueden explicar estos hallazgos.INTRODUCTION: Different studies have related familiar and regional adverse social conditions to perinatal outcome (neonatal mortality, low birth weight and prematurity); however, few studies have studied the effect of poverty on congenital anomalies.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the hazard ratio of 25 congenital anomalies and adverse social determinants as per the socioeconomic level of families and regions.
POPULATION AND METHODS: Exploratory, case-control study using data from the Latin-American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (Estudio Colaborativo Latinoamericano de Malformaciones Congenitas, ECLAMC). The sample consisted of 3786 live newborn infants with a single malformation and 13,344 controls selected among 546,129 births occurred in 39 hospitals from Argentina in the 1992-2001 period. Both direct and indirect (residence) risks (OR) were estimated, together with the interaction between the individual and residential socioeconomic levels for each of the 25 congenital anomalies.
RESULTS: Cleft lip with/without cleft palate (OR= 1.43) and ventricular septal defect (OR= 1.38) showed a significantly higher risk in the lower socioeconomic level. Low socioeconomic levels were significantly associated with a higher frequency of parental sibship (blood relationship); native descent; maternal age younger than 19 years old; more than four pregnancies; a low number of antenatal care visits; and residence in deprived regions.
CONCLUSION: Cleft lip with/without cleft palate and ventricular septal defects were significantly associated with a lower socioeconomic level. Lack of family planning and antenatal care; and exposure to environmental or teratogenic agents may account for these findings.Fil: Pawluk, Mariela Soledad. Automatic paraphrasing tools: an unexpected consequence of addressing student plagiarism and the impact of COVID in distance education settings
Text matching tools employed to detect plagiarism are widely used in universities, but their availability may have pushed students to find ways to evade detection. One such method is the use of automatic paraphrasing software, where assignments can be rewritten with little effort required by students. This paper uses the search engine analytics methodology with data from SEMrush and Google Trends to estimate the level of interest in online automatic paraphrasing tools, focusing on the period 2016 to 2020 and the four countries: the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. The results show a concerning trend, with the number of searches for such tools growing during the period, especially during COVID-19, and notable increases observed during the months where assessment periods take place in universities. The method employed in this study opens up a new avenue of analysis to enrich and supplement the existing knowledge in the field of academic integrity research. The data obtained demonstrates that faculty should be alert for student use of automatic paraphrasing tools and that academic integrity interventions need to be in place across the sector to address this problem
